There’s nowt better to soundtrack the turn of the seasons than a buncha new age synth drift and streaking cosmic aces. It’s turning into a yearly occurrence (see our ‘Convective Currents’ pick from 2012), and this time we’ve placed an emphasis on those artists exploring house music’s beautiful, meditative, tripped-out qualities, as with Elbee Bad’s ‘The New Age Of Faith’ earworm, the blissed magick of Maria Minerva and Karen Gwyer or the spiritual alignments of Maxmillion Dunbar and Teengirl Fantasy. We also find their close relations, John Heckle, Huerco S and Four Tet at their beatless and evocative best, alongside compatible dubs from Bullion, Peaking Lights and Food Pyramid & Roy Orb D.MT., plus distant visions of spiritual jazz from The Pyramids, Martin Rev’s charming ‘Strangeworld’ oddity, and GYBE!’s Roger Tellier-Craig at his sweetest on ‘New Model’. As so much “deep” and new house music calcifies to increasingly homogenous formulas, it’s cats like these who keep the spirit burning bright, free and psychedelic.
